Situation
Google is an American multinational technology company specializing in Internet-related services and products. These include online advertising technologies, search, cloud services, software and hardware. In 2010, Google, which had previously leased space at 111 Square 8, contracted to purchase the entire (270,000 m2) building, in a deal reported to be worth about $1.9 billion. It is currently the city's fourth largest building in terms of floor area in 2014. The building is one of the largest owned office-technology buildings in the world.
The challenge
The well-known technology giant Google sought to improve the aesthetic value and efficiency of the company's headquarters in New York. Therefore, windows were needed that would include basic features and at the same time be reinforced and extremely durable. Specifically, the project called for the installation of 3,500 windows for one of New York's largest buildings, 111 8th Avenue, which houses Google's offices. According to the specifications, a coefficient Uw = 0.57 W / m2K was required, so windows with very high insulation were needed.
The solution
Since no other company except ALUMIL (with an even better proposal of Uw = 0.55 W / m2K), was able to present a solution in accordance with these standards, the design office raised the thermal insulation coefficient to Uw = 1 ,14 W / m2K, in order to receive more offers. ALUMIL, which has been operating in the US for a decade now, quickly submitted its second proposal, based on the new requirements. In addition, ALUMIL continued to build a prototype, which included an extra shading system with an aerodynamic design and high-functionality interior shading. The ALUMIL sample window was installed in the allotted time for evaluation, responding in record time faster than its competitors. To confirm the final design, performance tests were carried out in ALUMIL's advanced test rooms in Greece and later in the USA, measurements regarding permeability to air, water, wind pressure and finally resistance to loads. Specifically, the company's innovative R & D department developed an adapted version of the excellent SUPREME S91 window system.
