The Challenge
In this pandemic period, people's daily lives are extremely affected. At the same time, close environmental issues need specific action. During this era, building a modern residential building based on sustainable design makes us pay attention to it.
The Solution
Oxygen is the first residential building of this size to be built in the post-pandemic era in Greece. It is also the first residential complex in Greece with international sustainability certification (BREEAM), raising the level for similar constructions in the near future.
Pieris Architects, the architectural firm responsible for the project (in collaboration with construction company Sustain), took a sustainable approach, focusing on bioclimatic innovation, environmentally friendly materials and a holistic philosophy regarding water and waste management. As they reflect "beyond the design of a low-energy building, we reinvented and finally created a new sustainable modern urban lifestyle".
The residential complex consists of 32 houses with one, two or three bedrooms and offers a stunning view opposite the Athens Olympic Stadium. From the first moment, Oxygen impresses with its "wavy" facade and sophisticated central entrance with the surrounding water area that resembles a luxury hotel lobby. The pandemic and its implications for our daily routines were taken into account by architectural design. Thus, with the view that a home could potentially be a workplace, the emphasis was on providing comfortable and naturally lit spaces. Sturdy aluminum frames with lifting and sliding contribute to this, covering wide window spaces, allowing natural light beams and ensuring high energy performance. Sustainable access is also evident in the outdoor areas and communal areas, with protected gardens and green areas for residents and wifi service available. It is also worth noting that each settlement has a separate monitoring system that measures energy consumption, thus encouraging people to adopt environmentally friendly practices.
In the post-Covid era, we need "smart" homes that can provide all the necessary amenities and security required of their occupants. Oxygen is a pioneering example of sustainable construction setting new standards for the residential complexes of the future.
