Once magnificent doors to freedom, airports have become areas of boredom and terror - though the emotional intensity of departure remains - The Architectural Review
An airport can be defined as the neutral zone, necessary to process passengers in and out, in the direction of a certain destination. From this point of view, the airport is the first and last building that one touches when visiting or leaving a place; for those traveling for leisure, an airport is the beginning and the end of their vacation and as such has an important role in the experience of a destination.
Kukës International Airport, also called Kukës Airport, is an airport about 3.5 km south of Kukës, Albania.
In 2016, the Albanian government granted permission to receive international passengers.
The airport was involved in a reconstruction intervention, which included the construction of a new terminal, a new control tower, and the expansion of the platform and runway. This was the second airport built in Albania, which was put into operation in April 2021.
Most of the passengers who use Kukës airport are frequent travelers, people who leave or return to their homes and travelers who can not afford the expensive travel costs.
As such, circulation flows should be efficient and save time.
Passenger access to the terminal is through the north facade (departures) and south (arrivals). To ensure maximum transparency and communication with the natural, wild and beautiful landscape of Kukës, as well as the minimal impact of the building, to avoid the feeling of being under isolation, the two main facades are made of very clean glass walls. offering optimal views from the lobby for departures or arrivals.
There are three main components that define the exterior of the Kukes Airport Terminal: glass walls, which provide an inseparable dialogue between the interior and exterior of the building, the steel structure and the sloping industrial roof, an identifying element for the buildings. of the airport terminal, which gives the volumetry an aerodynamic shape.
The design team strived for serenity, unity and building allows for future extensions using structural modularity and a clear scheme.
