The challenge

A historic hotel in the Century City area of Los Angeles needed a makeover in order to usher in a new era. The legendary Century Plaza is a landmark for the city, so its redesign should be in keeping with its long history.

The solution

Century City is a famous neighborhood in the western area of Los Angeles. It is a business center in the city and this becomes evident when one sees the spectacular view that the tall towers create in the sky. The Century Plaza Hotel, located in the heart of Century City, catches the eye of the visitor.

The building, the design of which was initiated by Minoru Yamaski during the 60s, was designated for redesign by the internationally renowned architectural companies "Pei Cobb Freed", "Gensler" and "Marmol Radziner". The architectural proposal aims to renovate the building as a whole and focuses on reconstructing its rooms and transforming them into large and luxurious suites. The result of this different direction based on the rooms is that their number is reduced from 726 to 394. The minimal lines of the building are followed from outside and inside, without any additional details. However, the sense of class and luxury is clear.

In the redesign some elements of the building's past were preserved, such as the special balconies. All hotel spaces are equipped with thermally insulated aluminum systems, lift & slide systems that enable high energy efficiency and at the same time blend perfectly with the modern style of the building.

Hotel Century Plaza is ready for the second cycle of life. This hotel is a special landmark for the city of Los Angeles, as it has housed the President of the United States of America and other celebrities. Now, the renovated Century Plaza will re-open its doors to once again enable comfort and high standards of living.
