Designing the Profile of the Future Architect

The architects’ challenges in the past, present and the future have been connected to the human scale. After World War II, due to economic expansion and industrialisation, cities expanded enormously. Planners and architects were in front of the new challenges. They on block, globally respected the principles of Athens Charter, but unfortunately forgot to design the city extensions and public spaces in human scale.

The high-rise buildings with the enormous disproportionate spaces in between them apparently neglected the human scale, desperately losing the social cohesion.

Paradoxically, modernism in particular put a low priority for public space, pedestrianism and the role of the city space as a meeting place for urban dwellers. After almost 40-60 years of neglected human dimension, our generation has an urgent duty to transform the public space and to once again create cities for people.

During the last two decades the most conscious cities and Mayors are focusing this argument. Urban planners are more and more in the reinforcement of pedestrianism as an integrated city policy for developing lively, safe, sustainable and healthy cities. The strengthening of the social functions in the city space will contribute to social. sustainability. City planners are the first, who shape our lives, by reshaping the cities organism. A city that invites people to walk must by definition have a reasonably cohesive structure, that offers short walking distances, attractive public spaces and a variation of urban functions.

Focusing on the human scale: "Adapting to the incessant technology and innovations, the future architect should not forget the human scale as a focal point, and in conclusion, to remember for whom we are designing.

Architects should not be distant from this global trend of the “new cities” of the 21 Century. Architecture’s aim in itself it is not just about form, it should also be an interaction between form and life. Obsession with the form or a building fostered identity, guides many architects today among them a lot of the Star Architects.

Exhibitionism are their guidance toward a certain success in the global media, which is attracted by these features, producing the “news bomb” of the case for the public, professional or not. The spectacular architecture in many cases unfolds in the wrong direction by not contributing in the urban context as it should and not enriching the city life with the public space participation and interaction. Spectacular or not, attractive or not, big or not big enough, a building in the city organism has its magnitude of influence, and WE the architects have the potential to address it properly.

Fitting to the continuous technology and innovations, THE FUTURE ARCHITECT should not forget the HUMAN SCALE as a focal point, and in conclusion remember FOR WHOM WE DESIGN.

Designing the profile of the future architect, the first editorial project of the SHARE Society is a collection of thoughts, architectural manifestoes and interviews to which 100 architects from all over the world have contributed.
