"The Masonry", located in the industrial zone of the city of Kamza, is an industrial type facility which provides storage and office space areas.
"The Masonry" project, dictated by the linear shape of the site located, is also developed according to the longitudinal axis. The volume of the building is situated parallel to the road from which the building is accessed.
The volumetric morphology mimics a "wall" along the street boundary. The functions are distributed at different floor levels, which are distinguished as separate volumes. The first volume, or the ground floor that will serve as the storage function, foresees the circulation of goods vehicles to the entry and exit points of the facility. The two volumes above will serve as office area, or spaces with variable function.
Based on the typology of the area, the project uses as its concept a "masonry" wall, which symbolizes the developmental and "constructive" character that industry has in human society.
According to the dictionary definition, a wall is called a “long and narrow construction with bricks, stones or adobe, usually connected with mortar, mud, etc. which is the side part of a building or serves to divide rooms, to surround a yard or a garden, etc. "
To apply the principle of a wall, the project volumes are phased with each other resembling the "bricks" of a masonry. Unlike a real wall, it is "built" in a more abstract form.
This is because the "bricks" are not placed on top of each other as a wall usually works; in this case the volumes of the object are intersected. The dynamics of the volumes in the longitudinal direction are more powerful, producing a cantilevered volume on one side, while in the other, the object rests on the stair-lift cage. Even in the transverse direction the volumes are gradually retracted creating a gentle staircase that leaves room for green terraces.
Brick in this project is used not only as a concept but also as a material. The longitudinal facades are covered with brick, while the transverse sides are partly covered with black sheet metal. The elegant vertical windows are divided into modular units and are alternated on each floor creating rhythm in the facade composition. The metal sheets are also used in the window frames, as well as in mesh form in the terrace parapet and the surrounding wall of the building. The predominant materials are brick, metal, glass; materials that fit the industrial typology.
Another important element is the greenery on each volume platform, which gives an invigorating and calming effect.
“The Masonry” building itself is quite dynamic, representing a productive and active environment, but at the same time controlled in relation to the urban context.
