This project consisted in the design and construction of 73 energy efficient apartments to house the families in need of Korça. For the first time, in Albania, the social houses had to comply with energy efficiency principles, enabling the households to reduce their electricity bills. This is an innovative project that can be replicated even elsewhere in Albania. The proposal focuses on passive strategies embodied in the building design. This is a strategy, which became part of the architectural vocabulary of the building without many costs.
Among the objectives of the project where: Reducing energy consumption and operating costs compared to traditional buildings; Contribution to the environmental protection and reduction of greenhouse emissions
What we see implemented is an embodiment of the concept of the progressive barriers, of consecutive and flexible build and spatial layers. These sequences protect the innermost part of the building in a dynamic way. They open the interior to the exterior when ventilation is needed or interpose in between the two, buffers protecting the apartment’s space from both cold and the unwanted greenhouse effect created by the summer solar irradiance.
The concept brought by us in this project was indeed already there, in Korca, perfectly implemented in its historical buildings. Our project introduces in the city architectonic volumes familiar to that of its old villas or to the uncommon buildings created by the local architect Kolevica during communism.
